Helsinki’s public transport system has unveiled an innovative solution for winter rail maintenance by repurposing a vintage tram into a specialized de-icing vehicle. The project, led by Kaupunkiliikenne, the city’s transport operator, ensures uninterrupted service on Light Rail Line 15 during Finland’s harsh winters.
Ngoku ka the City of Helsinki’s transport department, ukugcina overhead electrification infrastructure is critical for preventing ice buildup that can disrupt light rail operations. The converted tram, now known as “Ananas” (Pineapple) due to its distinctive yellow livery, is a prime example of sustainable urban mobility and resourceful engineering.
The tram originally entered service in the 1980s and underwent a 1999 ukulungiswa, Yongeza low-floor section for accessibility. For its new life as a de-icing vehicle, engineers at Kaupunkiliikenne’s maintenance division removed the passenger seating and modified the structure for bidirectional operation ngokufaka i second driver’s cab.
Endaweni yokusebenzisa i traditional felt roll to apply antifreeze, the new system deploys a high-tech spray mechanism, Ukuqinisekisa even distribution of de-icing fluid on the overhead power lines. This method improves efficiency while reducing maintenance time. The system is monitored through 10 CCTV cameras, providing real-time oversight for transport engineers.
Njengengxenye Helsinki’s broader urban mobility strategy, outlined by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom), Ukuqinisekisa year-round efficiency in public transport is a priority. Harsh winters in Finlend present operational challenges, with ice accumulation on power lines causing disruptions.
Ngokuzisa Iinanayi, Helsinki strengthens its winter readiness strategy for rail services, aligning with the city’s Smart & Clean Helsinki initiative, ejolise kuyo sustainable and innovative transport solutions.
The conversion of an existing vehicle instead of procuring a new one aligns with Finland’s circular economy goals kwaye EU transport sustainability directives. By retrofitting instead of replacing, Kaupunkiliikenne has minimized waste and maximized resource efficiency.
Furthermore, Helsinki’s commitment to maintaining low-emission transport systems is evident in this cost-effective, eco-friendly adaptation that enhances the city’s rail infrastructure.
With climate conditions becoming increasingly unpredictable, izixeko ezifana Helsinki bayawolana izisombululo ukuhambahamba smart to keep transport systems running smoothly. The success of Iinanayi may inspire other European cities to explore retrofitting older public transport vehicles for specialized purposes, extending their service life while meeting modern needs.
Ngamanyathelo afana neli, Helsinki continues to set global benchmarks in transport innovation, efficiency, and sustainability, ensuring its residents enjoy safe, reliable, and weather-proof public transportation unyaka wonke.
