The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has formalized a strategic partnership with the Meaningful Tourism Centre (MTC) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reinforcing their shared commitment to advancing sustainable and responsible tourism.
The agreement was officially signed at the Nepal-India-China Expo 2025 (NICE 2025) in Pokhara, Nepal, on February 25, 2025.
This collaboration aims to develop best practices, industry research, and capacity-building programs that support tourism as a positive force for economic, cultural, and environmental sustainability. The partnership reflects global efforts to integrate responsible tourism principles into mainstream travel development, aligning with international tourism policies and objectives set by UN Tourism and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Strengthening Responsible Tourism Through Collaboration
Under this MoU, PATA and MTC will work together to:
Promote sustainable and meaningful tourism through industry discussions, research, and training programs.
Support local communities and environmental protection while enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Organize workshops, speaking engagements, and knowledge-sharing initiatives to foster responsible travel practices.
Develop SMART Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure and improve tourism’s impact on stakeholders.
The Meaningful Tourism Approach: A Holistic Perspective
The Meaningful Tourism Centre, based in London and Kathmandu, promotes an approach that goes beyond sustainability by ensuring that all tourism stakeholders—travelers, local communities, employees, businesses, governments, and the environment—benefit equitably.
The model is rooted in positive psychology and wellbeing, incorporating sustainable business practices across all aspects of tourism and hospitality.
Driving Long-Term Sustainable Tourism Policies
The Meaningful Tourism paradigm aligns with international tourism policies promoted by UN Tourism, the European Travel Commission (ETC), and national tourism boards, emphasizing:
Sustainable hotel construction and financing practices.
Environmentally responsible destination management.
Measurable economic and social benefits for local communities.
Tourism policies that proactively adapt to climate change and industry shifts.
By integrating these principles, the PATA-MTC partnership will help destinations and tourism providers improve their sustainability strategies, ensuring tourism remains a viable and positive contributor to global economic development.
